Skye specialized foremost as a migration counter, conducting raptor, songbird and waterbird counts. His most recent field biology work has been with NOAA conducting seabird surveys and cetacean research offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. He has counted seasons at the Avalon Seawatch at the Cape May Bird Observatory where he set the all time record count of over 1,026,000 migrating waterbirds, the Point Pinos Seawatch for Montery Audubon, and ran the spring waterbird and hawk count programs at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory.  Skye worked for a total of 15 years combined on the Wisconsin and Michigan Breeding Bird Atlases as a field biologist, author and technical editor.

In addition to leading his own tours through Borealis Birding, Skye has led tours for Michigan Audubon, the Sax Zim Bog Birding Festival and has been working as a tour leader for Eagle-Eye Tours for the last three years featuring trips to South Texas, Colorado, Cape May and pelagics off of North Carolina.

He is a founding member of the effort to survey raptor migration on the Keweenaw Peninsula, the Brockway Mountain Hawk Watch and was formerly both the Chairman of the Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society and a member of the Michigan Bird Record’s Committee.

NEFSC_GU1803_20180729_7D_0389_CholewiakAfter several years of flying under the radar as a guide in the stunningly beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I decided it was time to make it a bit easier on those looking for a professional bird guide and advertise a little!

Guiding has been lot of fun, because any day in the field is a lot of fun! But beyond that, it is rewarding helping people connect with nature and getting opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife that their hearts have long desired to see. I really enjoy birding as well as other forms of field-naturalizing such as searching for butterflies, dragonflies, flowers and herps, as well as photographing the finds that catch my fancy. I will be offering a few types of guided tours- both group as well as privately scheduled outings for the individual. In addition to helping you get new species to your life or year list, I also cater to photographers looking to spend extended time photographing their subject. I’m just getting started with this website, so please check back soon to see the latest developments, and maybe we can get you set up with an outing of your interest. Hope to hear from you soon!                        ~Skye
